eye pillow

Description

A silky pillow filled with herbs and flax seed to be placed over temples and closed eyes for relaxation. The pillow also soothes headaches and aids sleep.

This is a great project for fabric remnants or scraps. Thinner fabrics work best since they allow the herbal scents to seep through. Also, soft fabrics, crepe, or silk feel nice on your face.

For my eye pillows, I bid on panels of vintage kimono fabric on eBay. I was able to get at least 5 pillows out of each panel with a little left over to make smaller lavender sachets.

Materials

  • Fabric (soft and/or silky)
  • Sturdy paper (funnel)
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle & thread
  • Whole flax seeds (or rice)
  • Dried lavender buds
  • Dried chamomile flowers
  • Dried orange peel
  • Dried spearmint

Step 1

Cut fabric into 8 1/2" x 10" rectangles.

Step 2

Fold your fabric lengthwise with the wrong side of the fabric facing outward.

Sew the longest side first, then sew one of the short sides. This will form a pouch. (If you sew your pillow by hand use small stitches so the filling will not work its way out.)

Optional: You can sew the second short side halfway, leaving a large enough opening to pour the filling in. This will save you time from sewing the rest of the opening by hand after you've filled the pouch.

Step 3

Turn the pouch inside-out.

Push the corners of the pouch out with a pen or pencil.

Step 4

Create the filling by mixing the herbs and the flax seed.

Using a funnel, pour the filling into the pillow opening.

Step 5

Hand sew the end closed using a needle and thread.

The eye pillow is ready to go. Relaxation is just what you need after a long day of sewing projects.
