A Great Reason to Get Up in the Morning

Erik and I are addicted to smoothies. It started as a summertime weekend treat when we lived in San Francisco, and has developed into a multi-day affair in the form of breakfast Monday through Friday. We’ve put just about everything in season into a smoothie at some point, although some concoctions are more successful than others, and some can never be recreated since we don’t remember what was in them (sadly). Some items are better paired with yogurt, some with soy milk, others with chocolate soy milk. Some items go well with a little green tea matcha, some with a scoop of sorbet. The process lends itself to endless experimentation, which is part of the fun.

The smoothies this week have been so good that we’ve actually managed to make the same smoothie four days in a row (very rare in our smoothie making experience since we usually run low on at least one ingredient after the first day). The amounts below are estimates since we just eyeball everything or throw in the amounts that happen to be on hand.

Add to blender:

  • 1/4 cantelope, cut in chunks
  • 1 peach, sliced
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt (preferably homemade)
  • Scoop of mango sorbet (or other complimentary fruit, preferably homemade)
  • 1/4 cup Ceres Medley of Fruits juice (natural guava, pineapple, papaya, etc.)

Makes enough for 2 pint sized glasses.

Here’s another yummy mix for late season peaches when the bounty of apples start to appear at the farmer’s market:

  • 1-2 peaches
  • 1 large honey crisp apple
  • 1 heaping cup of plain yogurt (preferably homemade)
  • 1/3 cup apricot juice
  • honey to taste

Enjoy!

Homemade Mashup

This morning was not my average morning. In fact, it was a morning filled with a very big accomplishment - one I’ve been planning for quite some time.

For breakfast I ate my homemade yogurt mixed with my homemade granola inside my homemade bowl!

Erik shrugged it off with a laugh and asked me if I was going to put on my handmade leather shoes and ride a donkey to work. Whatever. I’m not going to let him dampen my momentous occasion.

This was all possible because I’ve finally finished my first four bowls in pottery class. I am pleased with how three of them turned out. Unfortunately, the fourth one had a strange glaze effect on the inside, most likely due to glaze that was applied too thickly, and it is not pretty to look at. Three out of four isn’t bad, though.

Yogurt Throw Down 2006

Vanessa graciously agreed to host our first yogurt off at her apartment on Sunday. We all brought our latest creations from our new yogurt makers and compared the results. Vanessa offered a whole milk yogurt with a Fage starter. Mindy brought skim milk with a starter from her last batch of yogurt (which began at some point in a Stonyfield container). I tried my hand at a whole milk honey flavored yogurt with apples and walnuts, which I started with a mysterious Greek yogurt from Sahadi’s.
Everything tasted fatastic, especially with all the topings we brought along, including pomegranate seeds, dried cherries, almonds, and granola. Mindy also surprised with an amazing dessert made from yogurt. Her strained yogurt and brown sugar pie with a pecan crust was amazing and our heads were spinning with all the new possibilities for our yogurt.

As a side note, each of our partners, apparently competitive men, all, was very concered about who actually won. We insisted it was more of a yogurt tasting, not a competition, but truth be told, I think Vanessa won. Her yogurt was nice and creamy with a very mild taste. I have to admit mine was a bit thin and we couldn’t taste the honey as much as I had hoped.
